Lesson 2

You Change the World Around You

Key Bible Verses

Matthew 5:13

"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men."

Matthew 5:14

"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden."

Matthew 5:16

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

Helpful Explanation

Jesus gives his followers a new identity. He says we are "salt" and "light." In Jesus' time, salt was used to preserve food and to add flavor. As "salt," Christians are to have a good influence on the world around them, preserving what is good and making life better for others. Light helps people see in the darkness. As "light," our lives should shine in a way that points people to God. When people see the good things we do—our love, our kindness, our honesty—it doesn't bring glory to us, but to our Father in heaven.

Practical Application

Think about your workplace, your neighborhood, or your family. How can you be "salt" there this week? Maybe it's by being an honest employee, a kind neighbor, or a patient family member. How can you be "light"? Look for opportunities to serve others quietly and do good works, not for your own praise, but so that others might see God's goodness through you.
