Lesson 16

You Cannot Serve Two Masters

Key Bible Verses

Matthew 6:22-23

"The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"

Matthew 6:24

"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

Helpful Explanation

Jesus uses the picture of the eye to teach about generosity and spiritual focus. In the culture of Jesus' time, a "good eye" (or "single eye") meant a generous person, and an "evil eye" meant a stingy or greedy person. When our hearts are generous, our whole lives are filled with light and joy. But when greed and selfishness control us, our lives become dark and unhappy. Jesus then states a clear truth: you cannot serve two masters. You cannot give your whole heart to God and also give your whole heart to money and possessions. One will always win. We must choose. This does not mean money is evil, but it must not become our master. Only God deserves that place in our lives.

Practical Application

Ask yourself honestly: is money or material wealth competing with God for first place in your heart? Practice generosity this week as a way to loosen the grip that money may have on your life. Give something away. Share a meal. Help someone who cannot repay you. Every act of generosity is a step toward freedom and a declaration that God—not money—is your master.
