Matthew 6:19-20
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal."
Matthew 6:21
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Jesus teaches us about what we value most. Earthly treasures—money, possessions, status—can be lost, stolen, or destroyed. Clothes get eaten by insects, metal rusts, and thieves can take our belongings. These things are temporary. But "treasures in heaven" are eternal and can never be taken away. Heavenly treasures include things like acts of love, faithfulness, generosity, obedience to God, and investing in the lives of others. Jesus reveals a deep truth about the human heart: whatever we treasure most will control our hearts. If we treasure money, our hearts will always be anxious about money. If we treasure God and His kingdom, our hearts will be at peace.
Take an honest look at your life. What do you think about most? What do you spend most of your time and energy on? These are clues to where your "treasure" is. Ask God to help you shift your focus from temporary things to eternal things. This week, invest in something that has eternal value: share the good news with someone, show love to a neighbor, or give generously to someone in need.
