Lesson 14

Hungry for God, Not Just for Food

Key Bible Verses

Matthew 6:16

"Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward."

Matthew 6:17-18

"But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."

Helpful Explanation

Fasting is choosing to go without food for a time in order to focus on God in prayer. It is a powerful spiritual practice that has been part of the faith for thousands of years. Jesus does not say "if you fast" but "when you fast," showing He expected His followers to practice it. However, Jesus warns against making fasting a show. Some religious people in His day would look miserable and dirty so everyone would know they were fasting and think they were very spiritual. Jesus says when we fast, we should look normal on the outside. Fasting is a private matter between us and God. The purpose is to draw closer to God, not to impress other people.

Practical Application

If you have never fasted before, start small. Try skipping one meal and spending that time in prayer instead. Tell God what is on your heart and listen for His voice. Don't announce to everyone that you are fasting. Keep it between you and God. Fasting teaches us that our deepest hunger is not for food, but for God Himself.
