Lesson 13

When Only God Is Watching

Key Bible Verses

Matthew 6:1

"Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven."

Matthew 6:3-4

"But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly."

Helpful Explanation

Jesus teaches that generosity should come from a sincere heart, not from a desire to be seen and praised by others. In His day, some people would give money or help the poor in a very public way so that everyone would notice and admire them. Jesus says these people have already received their reward—the praise of others. But that reward is temporary and empty. True generosity is done in secret, where only God can see. When we give quietly—without bragging, without expecting anything in return, without making a show of it—God sees it and He will reward us. The focus of our giving should be on honoring God and helping others, not on making ourselves look good.

Practical Application

This week, find a way to help someone in need without anyone else knowing. It could be giving money, sharing food, helping with work, or any act of kindness. Do it quietly, without telling anyone or posting about it. Let it be between you and God. As you practice secret generosity, you will find that your heart becomes more focused on God's approval rather than the approval of people.
